MAKING DENTAL IMPLANTS POSSIBLE THROUGH BONE GRAFTING

There’s no doubt that dental implants are an excellent way of replacing missing teeth, to get you that BEAUTIFUL SMILE, while they are suitable for most people – dental implants need a minimum amount of healthy bone. When the dental implant is insert into the jawbone so it starts to bond with the surrounding bone, but if there isn’t enough bone, this bonding process can’t occur and the implant is likely to fail. This is why bone grafting and dental implants often go together during the implant process – it is a very predictable procedure with a high success rate.

WHEN IS A BONE GRAFT NEEDED ?

Dental implant procedures have become very popular in the treatment of tooth loss. Implants are the screws that mimic the root of your extracted tooth and support the crown. When there is not enough jawbone to support the dental implant due to bone erosion, traumatic tooth extraction, infection, long-term tooth loss, in some cases there may not be enough amount of bone to place the implant in, so bone grafting will need to be performed. Doing this will ensure the dental implant is properly aligned to achieve a great smile, and provide a proper and comfortable fit within the mouth.

SO WHAT IS A BONE GRAFT?

The amount of bone graft done always depends on how much bone has eroded. A little bone graft is the advise for patients who have only lost a tooth fairly recently. We use sterile, artificial bone particles obtained from various sources. It may be bone that we take from another part of your jawbone or synthetic bone materials obtained from animals (usually bovine and horse). These synthetic bone grafts are prepare in special conditions – sterilized with gamma rays and always FDA or WHO certified. The sterile bone granules resemble coarse sand that is use to fill the tooth socket. The granules are cover with a protective collagen membrane before sealing the area with stitches. After several weeks, the natural bone will fill the tooth socket and preserve the bone height until the missing tooth is replace with an implant.

HOW IS A BONE GRAFT PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

A bone graft aims to increase the bone volume around the implant. In suitable cases, bone grafts applied and implants placed happen at the same time. But in some cases, there may not be enough bone to support implants during the healing period. For these cases, we prefer to perform a bone graft procedure during the first visit. After 4-6 months, the bone graft will have healed providing enough bone volume to place the implant. Once the bone graft has healed, the next stage of the dental implant process can begin.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I WILL NEED A BONE GRAFT?

We will perform a 3D x-ray which measures the bone volume and diameter of the area and evaluate if a bone graft is needed. If there isn’t enough bone to place the implant, we will apply a bone graft.

WHO ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR THIS PROCEDURE?

  • Radiotherapy history with the head and neck
  • Some systemic disease (uncontrolled diabetes, bone metabolism disease)
  • Infection (Sinusitis)
  • Heavy smokers (more than 20 in a day)
